Asbestos Safety

In years gone by, asbestos was a popular material for housebuilders across the UK as it is resistant to both heat and chemicals.

Some of our developments, such as those built in the 1970s and 1980s, may have some asbestos present.  Homes built after the mid-80s are less likely to contain asbestos in the fabric of the building, but may still have some traces in elements such as artex coatings on ceilings.  Homes built from 2000 onwards will not contain asbestos anywhere in the building.

Asbestos is not dangerous if it's sealed safely and in good condition.  It’s only dangerous when it's broken or abraded and fibres are released into the air.

It’s important, if carrying out any work yourself, that you do not:

drill a hole through any asbestos boards

cut or break off any parts of asbestos products

rub down asbestos panels, or artex, with sandpaper

use wallpaper scrapers on asbestos products

remove asbestos panels to gain access to services.

You must allow us access to inspect the condition of any asbestos containing material when requested.

Your local Property Management Officer will be able to advise you on the location of any asbestos in your home.  If you need further advice on any of the above, please contact us by calling 0141 270 7262 or emailing: servicecontracts@bield.co.uk
