New housing in Milngavie
A turf cutting ceremony held on 31st August marked the start of building works at Oakburn Avenue, Milngavie. The development will include 26 new homes for older people and a day care facility for frail older people and those with dementia.

Before building works could start important flood improvements measures costing more than £1 million have been made to Oakburn Park. The total cost of the project will exceed £6 million.

Katrina Turner, Chair of Bield Association, commented, “It is wonderful to see this new project get off the ground. The Committee of Thomas Chalmers Housing Association worked tirelessly over many years to make this development happen.

‘When we merged in December 2005 Bield’s main commitment to Thomas Chalmers was to bring this dream to reality. We are delighted that we have managed to get to this stage.

“Our thanks are due to East Dunbartonshire Council and Communities Scotland for their continued commitment to the project, without which we could not have overcome the many obstacles that were in our path.”

Councillor Michael O’Donnell, Convener of the Council’s Social Services Committee, is delighted the much needed development will soon become a reality.

“With an ever increasing elderly population, East Dunbartonshire needs this type of housing and working with a well-known organisation such as Bield Housing means we will get homes of a very high standard that meet the needs of this important section of our community.

“The day care centre will offer opportunities for older people to come together in a modern, well-equipped building to chat, enjoy activities and for those who require care it will give their family and friends some time off from what can be a very difficult job.”

The new housing is accessed from Oakburn Avenue. It will consist of eight 2 bedroom flats and eighteen 1 bedroom flats together with a communal lounge and landscaped garden areas. The Day Care centre, accessed via Ferguson Avenue will provide facilities for 25 older people. It is designed specifically to meet the needs of frail older people and those with dementia.

Crudens Building and Renewals Group is the main contractor and it is anticipated the works will be completed by autumn 2008
