Bield buys site in Govan
Bield has bought a site in Govan to enable building of much needed new housing. The site at 18 Pearce Street was formerly a Post Office sorting office, which has been closed for a number of years. The purchase of the site has been supported by Glasgow City Council.

The site is near Govan Cross in an area of historic interest. There are listed buildings close by at Water Row and the Pearce Institute. The existing building will be demolished. An archaeological dig of the site will be carried out before any development is built. An initial archaeological assessment has been carried out. This suggests that the site may provide significant evidence on eighteenth and nineteenth century Govan, which was a critical time seeing the transformation of a small village to a large industrial town. There may even be medieval remains. It is hoped that the demolition and archaeological dig will happen early in 2008.

The initial plans for the site are for flats for older people and wheelchair users. This will help meet particular needs in the area. The new building will also contribute to the re-generation of Central Govan. Detailed plans will be drawn up during 2008.

Bield has consulted with the Govan Local Housing Forum and is pleased to have its support.

Katrina Turner, the Chair of Bield, commented, “We are delighted to have this opportunity to help older and disabled people in Govan and with the re-generation of the area. This is a challenging site, which will present lots of problems. But we are sure we can do the site justice and produce housing that will do the area proud.”
