Social Activity Assistant

Various Locations:

Service users are encouraged to socialise within the scheme/project. Volunteer Social Activity Assistants help organise and run a range of social activities within the communal areas of the scheme/project, such as lunch clubs, craft, games or reminiscence sessions.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Build good relationships with service users in the communal
areas
2. Assist with the planning and organising of activities within the scheme/project
3. Help prepare communal areas for activities, eg setting up equipment, preparing food and refreshment, etc
4. Work within the Association’s policies and procedures

Skills required:
No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with older people, have good communication skills, are reliable and willing to work as part of a team.

Time Commitment:
A regular commitment, eg two hours per week or fortnight or at set periods throughout the year (eg college holidays or term-time), as agreed with your Volunteer Line Manager.

Silver Surfer Tutor

Saunders Court, Corstorphine, Edinburgh

Volunteer Silver Surfer projects offer computer access to all service users, including internet and e-mail, in a communal area of a scheme/project. Service users wishing to use the computer are offered support through Silver Surfer Tutors.

Some service users may have their own computer in their flat. If the service user wishes to be tutored in the use of this computer, they are offered support through Silver Surfer Tutors in their own flat.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
1. Build a good relationship with an individual service user
2. Help a service user identify activities to do on the computer, eg send and receive e-mails, shop on-line, trace family tree, play games, make address lists, find local information, etc.
3. Undertake regular tuition sessions with the service user to help them use the computer.
4. Work within the Association’s policies and procedures

Skills required:
No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with older people, have good communication skills, are reliable and willing to work as part of a team. Some IT experience is essential, including a knowledge of using internet and e-mail. A knowledge of computer maintenance and trouble shooting is desirable but not essential.

Time Commitment:
A regular commitment, eg two hours per week or fortnight or at set periods throughout the year (eg college holidays or term-time), as agreed with your Volunteer Line Manager. Plus a minimum commitment of 6 months.

Befriender

Befriending aims to help service users who feel isolated or unable to get out very easily on their own. Volunteer Befrienders offer one-to-one companionship and where appropriate enable service users to maintain social contacts and be more included in their community or new activities.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Build a good relationship with an individual service user, visiting them on a regular basis in their own flat
2. Spend time and share activities with the service user, eg have a chat and a cup of tea, go out to an event or visit a local attraction
3. Work within the Association’s policies and procedures

Skills required:
No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with older people, have good communication and listening skills, are reliable and willing to work as part of a team.

Time Commitment:
A regular commitment, eg two hours during the day per week or fortnight or at set periods throughout the year (eg college holidays or term-time), as agreed with your Volunteer Line Manager. Plus a minimum commitment of 6 months.

Social Activity Assistant - Gardens

3 Locations:

Holmes Gardens, Broxburn, West Lothian
Stewart Court, West Calder, West Lothian
Stockbridge Care House, Edinburgh

Service users are encouraged to socialise within the scheme/project. Volunteer Garden Assistants help in the scheme’s garden by assisting service users in low maintenance duties such as: planting and weeding in garden areas; keeping the garden neat; constructing raised flower beds, designing hanging baskets, etc. This voluntary role is to assist the service users to enjoy and make full use of their garden.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
1. Build good relationships with service users in the communal areas
2. Help maintain garden areas, including planting where necessary
3. Work within the Association’s policies and procedures

Skills required:
No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with older people, have good communication skills, are reliable and willing to work as part of a team and who like working outside in a garden setting.

Time Commitment:
A regular commitment, eg two hours per week or fortnight or at set periods throughout the year (eg college holidays or term-time), as agreed with your Volunteer Line Manager.
