Water Hygiene

You may have heard of the risk to health, in certain circumstances, from the bacteria Legionella.  Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia, caught by inhaling small droplets of water suspended in the air as a mist or spray, that contain the Legionella bacterium.

Bield control and minimise this risk by ensuring that appropriate maintenance regimes are implemented in our schemes.  These include a regular programme of water sampling, temperature recording and tank inspections as well as shower head disinfection.  We also allocate funds out of our budget every year to replace, upgrade and disinfect water systems, where required.

We strongly advise that, if you have been away from your home for more than a couple of weeks at a time, you should flush your water system on your return.  You can do this by turning on all taps and running them and taking off the shower head and running water through the hose for at least 5 minutes (be careful not to create a mist or spray effect while doing so).

We want to keep you safe.  To do this, we need to disinfect your shower head every three months, test your mixer valves annually and inspect any water tanks in your home.  This is recommended where we have communal water systems.

You’ll receive a letter from us confirming the date of your next water hygiene visit.  Please make sure you are at home on the day of this visit.
